Classic curtailment treats a miner as a switch. When power gets expensive, machines are turned off. When it gets cheaper, they come back on. That works, but it ignores the range of settings in between.

Modern firmware lets a miner run at different power targets. Lower power usually means less hashrate but better efficiency, so each terahash costs less electricity. Higher power gives more hashrate at a worse efficiency. You can choose an efficient machine, agree a clear power arrangement and make sure each unit runs at a sensible setting for current conditions.
